    • Distinctive star pattern – Provides enhanced anti-slip traction while being visually appealing
    • Stays in place – Design prevents constant shifting or need for repositioning throughout winter
    • High traffic durability – Excellent abrasion resistance ideal for busy walkways and entrances
  • Traditional Wire Heating Technology

    Performance Limitations:

    • Uneven heat distribution – Wire spacing creates alternating hot and cold strips, leaving gaps in snow melting coverage
    • Slower warm-up – Takes longer to reach operating temperature, delaying snow melting effectiveness
    • 45% heavier – Bulkier construction makes installation more difficult and seasonal storage cumbersome
    • Hotspot risks – Wires placed too close together can create overheating zones, while gaps leave cold spots
    • Less efficient energy use – Requires more power to achieve comparable melting results

    Design & Durability Drawbacks:

    • Wire breakage vulnerability – Individual heating wires can fail if damaged, creating dead zones in the mat
    • Limited flexibility – Wire systems are more rigid, making them harder to position and store
    • Uneven wear patterns – Concentrated heat along wire paths can lead to premature material degradation
    • Installation complexity – Heavier weight and rigid structure require more effort during setup
    • Aesthetic limitations – Functional design prioritizes wire placement over visual appeal and optimal traction

Frequently Asked Questions

F.A.Q.

How much does it cost to run HOTStars heated mats?

Operating cost averages approximately $1 CAD per day when mats are actively running. Actual costs vary based on local electricity rates, outdoor temperature, and how many mats you're operating. The membrane heating technology is more energy-efficient than traditional wire-based systems, consuming less power while providing faster, more even heating.

Can I leave HOTStars mats plugged in all winter?

Yes. HOTStars mats are designed for seasonal outdoor use and can remain plugged in throughout winter. The GFCI power unit includes a reset button (ON) and test button (OFF) that let you control operation without unplugging. For energy savings, turn mats on when snow is forecast and off during clear weather. Some users add timer switches or smart outlets for automated control.

The mats only need to be left on during the snowfall and/or for a period of time after the snowfall. Mats may be laid out just before first frost conditions and can be left powered on during periods whereby temperatures are below 5 degrees Celsius or its equivalent of 41 degrees Fahrenheit.

Can the mats be automatically controlled?

Yes. On/off options include: having an electrician hard wire the connection to the breaker , or thermostats, or simple automatic controllers that can turn your mat on and off depending on snowfall and temperatures. This type of controller regulates the turning on and off of the mat without ever having to unplug it from the outlet and can be hardwired into the circuit by any certified electrician.

How long does it take HOTStars mats to melt existing snow?

Performance depends on snow depth and outdoor temperature. Under typical Canadian winter conditions (around -3°C / 27°F), HOTStars mats completely melt and dry a 4-inch snow accumulation in approximately 2 hours. The mats heat to 4-7°C above ambient temperature and melt up to 2 inches of snow per hour. During active snowfall with continuously blowing snow, melting takes longer as new snow keeps accumulating.

How many years will the mats last?

The mats should last 4-6 years if maintained properly. Please, see the owner's manual, included with your purchase, for proper maintenance instructions.

How many HOTStars mats can I connect together?

Connection limits depend on mat size and voltage:

  • Stair Treads (11" x 38"):** Up to 16 mats on 120V / 32 mats on 240V
  • Doormats (24" x 40"):** Up to 6 mats on 120V / 12 mats on 240V
  • Passageway Mats (20" x 48"):** Up to 6 mats on 120V
  • Walkway Mats (36" x 48"):** Up to 4 mats on 120V / 8 mats on 240V
  • XL Walkway Mats (40" x 59"):** Up to 2 mats on 120V / 5 mats on 240V

All connections use a single 15-amp GFCI power unit. You can daisy-chain different mat sizes together on the same GFCI using the waterproof male/female connectors on each mat.

Can I cut or trim HOTStars mats to fit my space?

No. Mat sizes are pre-molded and cannot be altered. Cutting, trimming, or modifying a mat in any way immediately voids the manufacturer warranty and creates serious electrical safety hazards. Measure your application area carefully and verify all measurements twice before ordering. If standard sizes don't fit your space, contact KEMF to discuss custom mat configurations.

What surfaces work with HOTStars heated mats?

HOTStars mats work on concrete, asphalt, stone, wood decks, and even grass. The mats sit on top of existing surfaces—no installation or permanent modifications required. The anti-slip rubber bottom prevents shifting throughout winter. At season end, hose off any salt or sand residue, let mats dry completely, and store indoors to protect from summer UV exposure.

Do HOTStars mats work in extreme cold?

Yes. HOTStars mats function in extreme Canadian winter conditions. User reports confirm effective operation at temperatures as low as -14°F (-26°C) with 11+ inches of snow. The mats heat 4-7°C above ambient temperature, so they remain effective even during severe cold snaps. Performance is best when mats are turned on before snow accumulation begins.

What's the difference between HOTStars and wire-based heated mats?

HOTStars uses membrane heating technology instead of embedded heating wires. Key differences:

  • Weight: 45% lighter than wire-based mats, easier to install and store
  • Heating coverage:** Membrane provides wider, more even heat distribution across the entire mat surface
  • Warm-up time: Faster heat-up compared to wire systems
  • Energy efficiency: Lower electricity consumption for equivalent snow-melting performance
  • Safety: Zero radiation, zero noise operation; safer than wire heating
  • Durability: Membrane technology reduces failure points compared to wire systems

Do I need a GFCI with HOTStars mats?

Yes. A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) power unit is required with every HOTStars installation for electrical safety. The GFCI is sold separately and is not included with mat purchases. One GFCI can power multiple mats up to the connection limits listed above. The GFCI shuts off power automatically if any electrical current begins leaking to ground, preventing shock hazards.

How do I store HOTStars mats in summer?

At the end of winter, hose off mats to remove salt and sand residue. Allow mats to dry completely. Store mats indoors in their original packaging or in a covered area away from direct sunlight. Proper storage protects the rubber from UV degradation and extends mat lifespan. Do not leave mats outdoors during summer months.

HOTStars How long is the warranty?

All mat products are backed with a two-year manufacturer's warranty.

To keep your cables safe and ensure vehicles drive only on the mats, you should set up two parallel tracks. Note that while these mats are vehicle-rated, they cannot be used with studded tires, as these will damage the rubber surface.

How do they work?

HOTStars™ Customer Installations

How many GFCIs will I need?

To power on and off a mat you require a power unit (GFCI) which connects your mat to either a 120V or a 240V electrical outlet. You can connect up to 15 Amps on a single GFCI. If your connected Mats exceed 15 Amps you will have to split up the mats and add a second GFCI to plug in a separate outlet. Don't worry we will help guide you and explain everything. We'll ensure it'll work for your property!
