How to Install HOTStars Heated Snow-Melting Mats
Understanding GFCI Power Requirements
What is a GFCI?
To power your HOTStars mats, you'll need a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) power unit. This unit connects your mats to either a 120V or 240V electrical outlet and ensures safe operation.
Power Capacity:
- Each GFCI can handle up to 15 Amps
- If your connected mats exceed 15 Amps total, you'll need to split them across multiple GFCIs using separate outlets

How the Mats Connect (Daisy-Chaining)
Mat Connectors:
Each HOTStars mat features:
- Male connector on one end
- Female connector on the other end
- 12-inch cord length on each mat
Connection Process:
- Take the male connector from one mat
- Align it with the female connector on another mat
- Line up the grooves properly
- Push the connectors together
- Screw to secure the connection
- Daisy-Chain Configuration:
- Mats can be connected in series (daisy-chained) to create custom layouts. Simply connect mat to mat until you reach your desired coverage, ensuring you don't exceed 15 Amps per GFCI.
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Step 1: Plan Your Layout
Measure the areas you want to cover (stairs, walkways, entrances, driveways)
Select the appropriate mat sizes for each area
Calculate total amperage to determine if you need multiple GFCIs
Step 2: Calculate Power Requirements
Add up the amp ratings of all mats you plan to connect
Example: 2 Stair Treads (0.8A each) + 1 Door Mat (2.1A) = 2.5A total (OK for single GFCI)
If total exceeds 15 Amps, plan to split into multiple circuits
Step 3: Position Your Mats
Lay out your mats in the desired locations
Ensure the GFCI power unit (with 6ft cord and female connector) can reach your electrical outlet
Plan the order of connection, starting from the outlet location
Step 4: Connect the Mats
Start with the GFCI power unit (it has a female connector and 6ft cord to reach your outlet)
Connect the first mat's male connector to the GFCI's female connector
Continue connecting subsequent mats male-to-female
If you need to change directions or create custom layouts, use extension cords:Male-Female extensions (standard extension)Female-Female extensions (to connect two male ends)Male-Male extensions (to connect two female ends)Available in 20", 40", and custom lengths
Step 5: Final Connection
Once all mats are connected in your desired configuration
Verify all connections are secure (pushed in and screwed tight)
Plug the GFCI power unit into your 120V or 240V outlet
The mats will begin heating immediately
Important Installation Tips
✓ Waterproof Connections: All connectors are waterproof when properly secured
✓ Extension Cords: Use manufacturer-approved extensions for more layout flexibility
✓ Multiple Circuits: If using multiple GFCIs, ensure they're on separate outlets
✓ Mat Placement: Mats can be placed on various surfaces including asphalt, concrete, wood, stone, and grass
✓ No Special Installation: Unlike in-ground systems, HOTStars mats require no construction or professional installation
✓ Portable: Mats can be repositioned or removed as needed
Safety Reminders
⚠️ Ensure all connections are properly aligned and screwed tight
⚠️ Do not exceed 15 Amps per GFCI power unit
⚠️ Use outdoor-rated outlets with weather protection
⚠️ Follow all local electrical codes
⚠️ If unsure about electrical capacity, consult a licensed electrician
Automated Controls (Optional)
For hands-free operation, HOTStars mats are compatible with:
- Smart thermostats
- Snow sensors
- Wi-Fi controllers
- Timer switches
This allows your system to activate automatically when conditions warrant, providing continuous winter protection without manual intervention.
